Good oral hygiene is essential for everyone, but it is especially important for individuals who wear dentures. Denture maintenance keeps them healthy and safeguards against unfavorable side effects caused by a contaminated or malformed set of artificial teeth.

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable substitute for missing teeth and gums. There are two kinds of dentures: full dentures and partial dentures. When all of the teeth are lost, complete dentures are utilized, whereas partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

Why Do People Get Dentures?

A multitude of reasons may necessitate the use of dentures. People may have missing teeth as a result of dental decay, damage to the tooth, or hereditary disorders. Gum disease can also lead to tooth loss. Dentures created to replace these lost teeth are produced from materials such as porcelain, which is comparable to tooth enamel, and acrylic resins, which are durable and long-wearing.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

Full dentures have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years, whereas partials have a maximum lifespan of 15 years.  Dentures can wear out over time, and the shape of your mouth may alter as you age. You may enhance the longevity of your dentures by carefully caring for them.

Why It’s Important To Upkeep Dentures

Plaque and food adhere to dentures in the same manner as they adhere to real teeth. Dental plaque is a bacteria coating that accumulates on dentures and teeth after eating and drinking. Plaque can build up on your dentures if you don’t clean them, putting you at risk of gum disease and poor breath. Cleanings are critical to your overall dental health.

7 Tips to Upkeep Dentures

  1. After eating, always remove your dentures and rinse them under lukewarm water. This will aid in the removal of any food debris or loose particles. There is no need for mouthwash; simply rinse, clean, and store.
  2. Brush your dentures using a soft-bristled toothbrush made for dentures. These toothbrushes might help to keep the surface of your dentures from being scratched. All regions of the denture surface should be cleaned. You may clean your dentures with a denture cleaner or mild soap and warm water. Brushing loosens and removes any denture adhesive as well. Rinse the dentures with warm water after brushing.
  3. Dentures can distort if they dry out or are immersed in hot water. When not in use, your dentures should be stored in room temperature water or a denture solution suggested by your dentist. An extra benefit is that soaking dentures in a cleaning solution can help eliminate bacteria that cause foul breath.
  4. Dentures are far more brittle than natural teeth. Place a cloth beneath your dentures if you are rinsing them over a sink. Also, do not bend or rough-handle your dentures when cleaning, as this may cause them to shatter or the plastic clasps to come free.
  5. You should not rinse your dentures in the kitchen or another part of the house. To avoid losing your dentures, always complete your cleaning procedures in the bathroom. This also helps to keep your denture care regimen consistent.
  6. Never wear the dentures to sleep. Dentures require rest from their everyday routine!
  7. Schedule regular dental checkups. In addition to following these denture care tips, it is always a good idea to see a dentist for the most up-to-date information on denture care.

The following items should never be used to clean dentures:

  1. Cleaning supplies that are abrasive.
  2. Brushes with stiff bristles, as well as strong cleaners and toothpaste, are far too abrasive and can significantly destroy dentures.
  3. Toothpaste that whitens. Toothpaste containing whitening agents can be quite abrasive. They should not be used to clean dentures.
  4. Water that is hot. Heat can alter the shape of the material.

Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions

Following your dentist’s instructions is one of the best things you can do for the care and maintenance of your new dentures. If you have any questions, please contact your dentist.
